Untrustworthy because he said Obama was clean or untrustworthy because he didn't hold up to the pressure of the ensuing accusations? Because if in the latter case I completely agree, but not in the former. Wouldn't it be nice to have politicians who could say, "What? No, I didn't mean 'clean' to refer to his personal hygiene, I meant it as in he's coming in with a clean slate and fresh ideas. I'm certainly sorry if I offended anyone," and say it in a way that made it ridiculous to imagine taking his comment as ill-intentioned? I have no idea whether or not Biden is secretly racist, but it'd be nice to see someone be confident of his or her intentions.
 

I'd be really interested to see an honest discussion about race btw serious politicians (and yes, I know it's not going to happen b/c the discussants would become unelectable). But wouldn't it be amazing to have Biden turn this into a platform for saying, "We all have prejudices; let's talk about what America can do to deal with our unfinished legacy of poisoned race relations." -EW
 

springydog makes a great point. now, i wonder if it would be overanalyzing to question whether biden's lack of confidence about his intentions is a symptom that it *was not immediately ridiculous to him* that his own comment reflected some latent racism.
